STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway is Now Open

Last updated 30.09.2020

We are delighted to be welcoming visitors back to STEAM.

To limit overall visitor numbers, we have introduced timed-tickets for museum admission. All visitors and Season Ticket holders are required to book online in advance. Tickets are available up to three weeks in advance. Book your tickets online today.

The Museum has achieved the Visit Britain “We’re Good to Go” certification. As part of this, we have completed comprehensive risk assessments and implemented a range of measures to aid social distancing and maintain cleanliness within the Museum.

For more information on the changes that we have put in place, please see below.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us on steammuseum@swindon.gov.uk or call 01793 466626.

How can I book a visit?

All visitors will need to pre-book a timed admission slot online in advance of their visit, including STEAM Season Ticket holders and Friends of Swindon Railway Museum. We are currently unable to offer admission tickets on the door.

Please click here to book your tickets.

Tickets are currently available up to three weeks in advance.

When booking your tickets online, you’ll need to select a date and arrival time for your visit, then add the number of tickets you would like to your basket. You will then have the opportunity to add a STEAM guidebook or one of our new children’s activity books to your order.

In line with current government guidance, bookings should follow the ‘rule of six’ and bookings should only be made for more than six people if they are all part of the same household or support bubble.

You will be requested to provide a name for each ticket and one phone number to make your booking. Your details will only be shared with public health agencies if required by the NHS Test and Trace program. If your booking is for more than six people, one our Team will contact you before your visit to discuss your booking.

You can arrive any time during your timeslot and once you are in the Museum you are welcome to stay as long as you like until closing time.

If you are a STEAM Season Ticket holder or a Friend of Swindon Railway Museum, there is no charge to pre-book your timed slot. Please ensure that you select the Season Ticket or Friend option on the online ticketing website. A member of our friendly Front of House Team will ask to see your card on arrival.

What are your opening hours?

STEAM is open:

Monday to Saturday 10am – 5pm (last admission 4pm)

Sundays 11am – 4pm (last admission 3pm)

Please note that STEAM may be closed to the public on certain days to allow school groups to enjoy our displays.

What do I do when I arrive at STEAM?

On the day of your visit, arrive during the timeslot you have booked. In order to keep our scraggery area clear, it may be necessary for you to queue outside for a short period of time while we process bookings in order of arrival.

Once you are inside the STEAM building, please show your booking confirmation to our friendly staff on the Front Desk. You can either print this off or show the confirmation on your phone.

We look forward to welcoming all of our visitors back to STEAM. However, if you or anyone else in your party is feeling unwell please stay at home and contact us to move your booking to another date.

What safety measures will be in place?

The STEAM building has undergone a thorough cleaning prior to reopening. Enhanced cleaning will take place every day and hand sanitiser is available throughout the museum.

Perspex screens have been installed where necessary – but you can still expect a warm welcome from our friendly staff. Our staff have also received additional training to keep everyone safe.

During your visit:

  • Please maintain a 2-metre social distance at all times
  • If you’re 11 years or older, please wear a face covering at all times (unless you have a legitimate reason not to)
  • Please use the hand sanitiser provided or wash your hands regularly during your visit
  • Please follow the one-way system arrows where marked and look out for our safety signage

Are your toilets open?

Yes, our toilet facilities are available for use and we have introduced enhanced cleaning regimes and hygiene measures.

We're extending Season Tickets!

Existing Season Tickets will be automatically extended to ensure a full 12 months of validity.

Season Tickets that were valid after 18 March 2020 will be credited by the number of days that STEAM was closed, or by the number of days to the original expiry date, whichever is sooner.

If you have a Season Ticket you will still need to book a timed admission ticket online, but you won't be charged. Please bring your Season Ticket with you when you visit, along with your booking confirmation.

If you would like to check your new expiry date, please contact us.
