Fun-filled adventures for February Half-Term

GET UP CLOSE and climb aboard* magnificent locomotives, be a signalman in the GWR interactive Signal Box and ‘drive’ the steam train simulator while travelling through STEAM’s story-telling displays!
For extra creative fun, join our friendly Learning Team at our fabulous drop-in sessions and design your own holiday poster! This unique activity ties in with our brand new exhibition 'The Art of Publicity'.
We also have a wide range of activity trails, available every day. 

These activities are free with admission and to STEAM Season Ticket holders!​

Special Half-Term Activities

Thursday 15 February 2018,  Drop-in sesssions: 10am - 12 noon and 1pm - 3pm

Join our friendly Learning Team and create your own colourful poster!​ 

These informal drop-in sessions will take you on a journey as you explore the GWR's clever use of graphic design and publicity and experience the true magic of steam railways. 

Discover the colourful range of GWR posters that advertised holiday places on the GWR rail network in the glorious days of the GWR! 

These drop-in sessions follow the theme of our new special exhibition, 'The Art of Publicity​'.

Just ask for details at the STEAM Ticket Desk.

Meet the Railway Workers 

Saturday 10 February, 10.00 am – 4.00 pm February, 10.00 am – 4.00 pm 

Take this amazing opportunity to meet real GWR engine drivers and signalmen who will show you the controls and bring the great railway story to life! This unique experience is especially popular with grandparents visiting with their families.
Just head for No. 6000 King George V, No. 3717 City of Truro and No. 4073 Caerphilly Castle and our friendly STEAM volunteers will welcome you aboard!  


Children also get a special GWR certificate when they ‘change the points’ in STEAM’s authentic GWR Signal Box.

Special Detective Activity Box 

Available every day, 10.00am – 5.00pm

Have heaps of fun following clues on our mystery activity trail!

Our unique STEAM Detective Box includes a fun mystery trail that takes you around the Museum plus GWR puzzles. 

The box comes complete with a magnifying glass and secret message pen.

So get set for uncovering important evidence as you explore intriguing hands-on objects and famous steam engines!

You can buy the activity box at the STEAM Shop. 

Cost: £5 per box in addition to the standard STEAM ticket price.

Find the Numbers Trail  

Every day

As you travel around the Museum, you’ll see many different numbers, big and small. Follow our fascinating trail to find numbers in some very surprising places!

Track It Down Trail (age guide: under 5 yrs)   

Every day

Add to the fun with this trail that takes you through the Museum. 
Hunt for objects, shapes and colours and get  really involved with STEAM’s interactive displays and hands-on exhibits.

Work It Out! Trail (Age guide: 5-9 yrs)

Every Day

Take up the challenge and explore famous locomotives, even walk underneath 80 tonnes of metal as you work out the answers to some intriguing questions.

Play Areas for Young Children

Every Day

Very young children really get to use their imagination with the Museum’s dedicated play areas which include play tables for colouring fun and interactive wooden toys, specially designed for little ones.

To keep everyone's energy levels up, the Museum's Platform One Café has a whole range of tempting meals and refreshments to suit all tastes and budgets. (There’s a 5% discount in the Café to STEAM Season Ticket holders too.)

Good to Know 

STEAM is fully accessible and opens every day, 10.00 am - 5.00 pm, with last admission at 4.00 pm.
Please note that under 16s must be supervised by an adult at STEAM.
To make the most of your time at STEAM, it's best to allow around two hours for your visit.
There’s free parking at the Swindon Designer Outlet car parks. Please ask for details at the STEAM ticket desk.
