Object of the Month

Object of the Month

Our Object of the Month series offers an opportunity to explore an object from the museum’s collections or exhibitions in more detail. Every month, a GWR object will be featured on this page, providing an insight in to an interesting  piece from the museum.

This year marks 170 years since the first Swindon Works ‘Trip’ which took place on 14th June 1848.  ‘Trip’ was the name given to the annual shut down of Swindon Works when all of its employees and their families went on their summer holidays.
The earliest trips were only available to members of the Swindon Mechanics Institution, but in time ‘Trip’ grew to include all Swindon Works employees and their families.  Free trains were laid on by the GWR to take the holiday-makers to destinations across the South West and beyond.
