Swindon Borough Council is currently developing its new Local Transport Plan, shaping the future of Swindon's highways and public transport for the coming years. We've recently held a consultation to understand what you see as the priority areas we need to be addressing in our new plan.

In July 2004, the Department for Transport published its White Paper 'The Future of Transport - a Network for 2030', setting out the Government's longer-term aspirations. It highlighted that good transport is essential for a successful economy and society:
Swindon Borough Council, in partnership with English Partnerships (now the Homes and Communities Agency, HCA) commissioned WSP in June 2008 to prepare a Strategic Transport Strategy. The purpose of this commission was to provide a comprehensive understanding of the transport interventions required to maintain choice, facilitate and support sustainable growth, and in doing so, to inform the Core Strategy and Local Transport Plan review (LTP3).
To help guide the development of the strategy and balance conflicting demands, three objectives were agreed with local stakeholders. These are: deliver a vibrant local economy; improve the sense of place; and reduce the need to travel.
Following a review of current transport trends in Swindon, and a thorough assessment of options and the implications of potential growth to 2026, the final Transport Strategy was completed in May 2009.
Key elements of the strategy are: Rapid Transit Network, orbital bus route, Car Parking including Park and Ride; improved pedestrian and cycle networks and facilities, town centre improvements; highway improvements; and personalised travel planning for new residential developments.
The Transport Strategy, a full copy of which can be found below, was approved by Cabinet on 10th June and is due to be considered by full Council in July. An executive summary of the strategy can also be found below.
