Highworth Library runs three lively minded, diverse and approachable groups.
Tuesday Reading Group
Our last meeting was on Tuesday 6 July 2010 where we discussed The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. This was one of the rare occasions when the whole group enjoyed the same book.
The next meeting will be on Tuesday 17 August 2010 at 2pm where the group will be reviewing The Rose of Sebastopol by Katherine McMahon.
.If you are interested in joining any of the reading groups at Highworth Library call us on 01793 463500 for more information.
Wednesday Reading Group
This month the group had read either The Lady Elizabeth by Alison Weir or Howards End is on the landing by Susan Hill.
The Lady Elizabeth by Alison Weir provoked opposing reactions. Those people that read historical fiction and were interested in learning something about the early life of the young Elizabeth I enjoyed it. Other members did not find the writing style at all engaging, were not drawn in to the story and found it a rather boring book. We agreed to disagree!!
Howard’s End is on the landing by Susan Hill was optional and of those who read it, one thought it was very light-weight whereas others were engaged by the journey through the books in the author’s house. Some books are read to entertain and pass the time and this is one of those.
We are a very friendly group, who meet once a month to discuss books we have read and pass our time with friends, tea and biscuits. Our meeting always produces lively discussion about the books we’ve read and often other more general topics too! If you would like to join us please either leave your contact details with a member of the library staff or just turn up at our next meeting in Highworth Library on Wednesday 1 September at 10.45..
Thursday Reading Group
Highworth Library holds an evening reading group on the second Thursday of each month. It starts at 6.30pm and usually runs for about an hour.
Our next meeting will be on 9 September 2010, when we shall be discussing The Help by Kathryn Stockett.
Unfortunately this group is now full and unable to take any new members at present.
Three children joined us today. We had a short introduction to the Group – its aims and objectives – and discussed the current Theme and took suggestions for future possible Themes including:
Animals
Foods
And Books by Michael Morpurgo, Jacqueline Wilson, J K Rowling and Lemony Snicket.
We have a dedicated Review board, for us to display all our various artwork, and we spent some time cutting out fictional characters to create a border for our board.
This month’s Theme is Space. Chosen to relate to the Summer Reading Game – Space Hop. After we had chosen our books we had juice and biscuits and talked about publicising the Group in the hope of attracting more members. The girls who attended promised to talk to friends, at school who they thought might be interested so……here’s hoping. We are very keen to recruit new members and would welcome anyone between 7 and 11 years’ old. We meet at 4.00pm in Highworth Library on the last Tuesday of each month during School Term time. The meetings usually last about half an hour and will include a craft activity. The next Meeting is on Tuesday 29th June at 4.00pm.

Due to the popularity of the group we have had to temporarily close it to new members. However, the Readers' Group has a book review display in North Swindon Library that is updated monthly after each meeting and visitors to the library can read the group's review of each month's book

Our next meeting, on Monday 6 September at 10 am, will be about Small Wars by Sadie Jones.
This is Sadie Jones' second book and is described as, "A passionate and beautifully written tale of personal loss in the midst of war in late 1950s Cyprus, that raises important questions that are just as relevant today. What happens when everything a man believes in - the army, his country, his marriage - begins to crumble? Hal Treherne is a young British soldier on the brink of a brilliant career. Transferred to Cyprus to defend the colony, Hal takes his wife, Clara, and their daughters with him. But Hal is pulled into atrocities that take him further from Clara, a betrayal that is only one part of a shocking personal crisis to come."
This book has been chosen by the group because of their enjoyment of Sadie Jones' first book..
Come and join us if you like talking about books. We usually meet on the first Monday of the month at 10am and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee together as well as discussing our chosen book.
We are a small and friendly group who meet once a month on a Monday Evening at 6:45pm. The next meeting is on 27 September 2010 and the book we are reading at present and will discuss at that meeting is called The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbary.
We have read a wide selection of books including autobiographies, Classics, crime to name but a few and we are always looking for interesting books to read.
To find out more about the group please phone Shirley on 01793 464495 or call in to the library.
