Integrated Service for Disabled Children - Speech and Language Therapy

Service Description

The Speech and Language Therapists work in all of the four Integrated Locality Teams as well as this Team, the Integrated Service for Disabled Children. Speech and Language Therapists assess children’s communication and sometimes eating and drinking, and then work with families and other services to help them improve the child’s skills or opportunities for communication and eating.

Speech and Language Therapists across Swindon work in a variety of settings, including clinics, pre-schools, mainstream and special schools and children’s homes. As well as helping individual families, they also do a lot of training for other professionals working with children in schools, pre-schools and children’s centres, for example.

Types of Provision

Type of Provision Description Contact and Referral Details
Support available to all children and young people, in localities were appropriate. Integrated Locality Team Speech and Language Therapists offer training to pre-schools, schools and Children’s Centres which benefits all children attending those settings. Staff in this team also offer training, including in Signalong. Contact via Eldene Health Centre on 01793 439960.
Support for those children and young people with additional needs who need targeted services. Integrated Locality Team Speech and Language Therapists help children in clinics, schools and pre-schools who have language delays, Specific Language Impairments, and stammers, for example. Contact via Eldene Health Centre on 01793 439960.

For those children and young people with multiple needs who need specialist services.

Those not making progress after support as above, or because of the severe nature of their need.

Speech and Language Therapists  in this team have specialist skills in the following areas – Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Cleft Lip and Palate, Deafness and Hearing loss, Alternative and Augmentative Communication, Eating and Drinking, Down Syndrome, Special School work. They work with other team members, including families to improve children’s skills and/or opportunities for communication or eating. Support Practitioners help us to do this.

Staff contribute to multi-agency assessment via the Early Years Pathway, but they also work in mainstream and special schools and Specially Resourced Provisions across the Borough. Training is offered, for example in Signalong and eating and drinking difficulties.

For those children and young people in need of immediate care and protection who need specialist services.

Those with the most severe needs after support as above, or because of the acute nature of their need.

Work in team around the child when children are identified as ‘in need’ or have a Child Protection Plan, for children who are already known to us.
