This oil painting was donated to STEAM in June 2007 by Terry Court
Terry Court was Arts Officer for Thamesdown from 1974 – 1993. He painted this picture of his memories of growing up in Swindon
.
Railway Town gives an impressionist view of the railway industry that was central to Swindon until the Works closed in 1986.
At the front of the painting men are seen entering the Works site through the famous tunnel entrance in Emlyn Square in Swindon’ Railway Village. A Great Western express train hurtles though the centre of the picture with smoke billowing from its chimney, while coal heaps and signals further illustrate Swindon’s identity as a railway town. The scene is completed with various Swindon landmarks towards the back of the scene, including St Marks Church and Moredon Power Station.
