Planning Your School Visit

Welcome to STEAM Education

What is on offer at STEAM?

Choose from Victorian or World War 2 discovery sessions or join us for a Teacher Led visit.
You can explore the Discovery Sessions on offer for school groups organised by theme under Key Stages. These run every day of school term time except for two weeks in October and two weeks in March,  when our We'll Meet Again WW2 event for schools is running.
Schools and Further Education groups are also welcome to come on a self-guided visit, and resources are available to support this. Please note that there may be restrictions on available dates for this type of visit because of the amount of teaching that happens every day amongst the Museum displays.
STEAM Education has been awarded the Campaign for Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge.

What happens during a Discovery Session?

All of our sessions promote cross-curricular learning through handling original objects and ephemera and storytelling using characters, costume, drama and role-play.
Each discovery session has a clear learning outcome and links to both the old and new National Curriculum.
Most of all, we want the children to enjoy themselves and use their imaginations to explore possibilities and be inspired to learn more. All Discovery Sessions are delivered by qualified teachers with DBS clearance, experienced at all Key Stages and in Special Needs.  They take place in authentic settings in the galleries where children can contextualise their learning.

Where can I find pre and post visit learning resources?

As well as the summaries of our discovery sessions by Key Stage you will also find additional learning resources here.
