Time Travellers: Christmas 

 

A Victorian Family Christmas!

 
KS1: Victorian Family Life at Christmas

Focus: The traditions of a Victorian family at Christmas. The Victorian origins of Christmas trees, cards, stockings, food, parlour games, Father Christmas and decorations.

Overview: Children will explore the traditions of Christmas past to understand their influence on how we celebrate today.
At this event, children will have two hours of contact time with STEAM Education staff. They will participate in a range of activities. These include costumed role-play, handling original objects, making traditional decorations, Victorian parlour games and a Christmas story.

Curriculum links: 
• Events beyond living memory that are significant nationally.

 

Christmas in a Victorian New Town


KS2: Christmas in a Victorian New Town

Focus: The traditions of a Victorian Christmas celebrated by working class families in the GWR Railway Village. The Victorian origins of Christmas trees, cards, stockings, food, parlour games, Father Christmas and decorations.

Overview: Children will explore traditions developed at a time of great change in Britain brought about by developing steam technologies and the introduction of the railways.
At this event, children will have two hours of contact time with STEAM Education staff. They will participate in a range of activities. These include costumed role-play, handling original objects, making traditional decorations, and Victorian parlour games.

Curriculum links:
• A study of an aspect of British History beyond 1066: A significant turning point in British history.
• A local history study.
